There's a lot going on in the world today to clean up the environmental mess--from implementing conservation methods and new ways to harness energy, to brownfield redevelopment of large and small contaminated areas. But what do we do with old, unsafe power plants? Our research into the environmental impact of fossil fuels has inspired us to take on a pretty major project in reducing fossil fuel emissions. We are leading a movement in our community to call for closure and redevelopment of the site of a local, obsolete coal and oil-fired power plant that is apparently non-critical to the New England energy grid. We meet with local and state officials, work with several environmental groups, and raise community awareness on the health impacts, environmental issues and revenue losses to our community. We are gratefully buoyed by public support. Read more about our efforts at visionforsalem.org.
